Whether you are blogging, using Facebook, Tweeting, or whatever, writers need to get active in the online community. If you’re writing and you aren’t doing any of these things (then you’re probably not reading this…but) you NEED to get busy. Authors today don’t have the luxury of being recluses. Agents and editors want to have authors you have a following or are comfortable in the online arena. As a writer, you will be doing most of your marketing no matter if you self-publish or get picked up by an editor. You have to be able to sell. You may not be selling books yet, but you can market yourself.
Now don’t get me wrong, don’t try to sell yourself by way of annoying people. Don’t tweet agents or authors and tell them to check out your website or ask if they’ll read your book. Leave intelligent comments on their site. Keep it natural. Be yourself, plant the seed, and things will happen. Always remember to act professionally because you want to be taken seriously. You can still be your quirky self, but you don’t want to overwhelm anyone either.
If you don’t have a website yet, make one. You can spend money or do a free blog, doesn’t matter, but buy yourname.com if you can because it’s good to have. Talk about writing, books, movies, or anything that interests you…just do something. Not only will a website encourage you to write, but it can connect you with others who share your interests. In the writing world, associating with others who share that same passion is a good thing. The internet is great for networking. Utilize it. I purchased discoverywriter.com because I wanted a website that talked mostly about writing. I also purchased karenalapray.com so that I will have it when I’m published.
Confession – I was terrified of Twitter and Facebook. I had a Facebook account that I never used unless I was having a baby or moving (so sad). I thought that Twitter was a complete waste, but now it is my biggest tool for connecting with other writers. I’m on LinkedIn and have joined a few writers groups. There are several other things you can do as well, but you don’t have to do everything. Just do what suits you.
In a digital age, we need to keep up with the trend. Use the resources that are available to you and they will help you in your endeavors. Keep up with the times because things are always adapting and you don’t want to get left behind.
