Kiersten White was part of the Teen Bookfest at the Provo Library. Okay. No problem, I like YA. No, not YA Bookfest…Teen Bookfest.
She spoke about how teens are not “The Chosen One” like the novels they read, but that they can choose themselves, create the life they want for themselves. It’s the old “Reach for the Stars”, “Follow Your Dreams”, and “You can Accomplish Anything” mantras from my yesteryear. But that’s the point. Adolescents need to hear these things now – in their youth. Before it’s rationalized out of them. Before they’re cynical. Unfortunately, adults are too practical. We don’t like to be, but we are.
This event wasn’t geared towards me, but I see the necessity of it. And fortunately for our egos, we weren’t the only adults there to take advantage of her appearance. We met the author, purchased some books, had some laughs, and got to spend the afternoon eating at Olive Garden while talking about books and writing. Sounds like a win to me!
